Due to the current situation the passport office has stated they are working with a skeleton staff. Therefore processing times are taking longer than normal. The date shown on our site is an average of the last 30 days so may include data from applications sent before lock down.
Post your experiences here for applications made since lock down to give others an idea of current situation.

My daughter applied for her passport renewal on 7th July and received the new passport on 21st July.
But she hasn’t received her old passport back yet (which has lifetime visa). During digital check and send service in post office we were told that it would be sent back...
How long is it taking now a days for old passport to come back?
Wanted to share my experience of renewing an adult UK passport, applying from Australia.
It's due to arrive on 30th of July 2020.

@fairy1234 May I ask which Passport Office dealt with your application?
Conversely, my mum applied for her renewal from Turkey back in April and is still waiting for the replacement. Her Turkish residency permit, for which she needs the passport, expired in June and she's been calling every day to no avail.

@fairy1234
I am in a similar situation, applying for a passport whilst in Australia, it seems your application got some early traction at least once your documents arrived, I hope my application gains traction soon otherwise I will be in some trouble as my visa is expiring shortly.

* Helpful as could be, made notes on my application regarding my situation and the urgency of the application. Sent internal email about potentially arranging delivery to an UK address to avoid shipping delays (so I can get a photocopy for my visa application) if the application is approved too close to the deadline and to avoid overseas shipping delays (HMPO refused this request, said I can only change the address to the UK if I am in the UK).
** Twitter "forwarded" the details of my case to their colleagues and just asked me to be patient (a liberty I do not have unfortunately).
*** Contacted my MP, their office staff contacted me within a few hours and asked for a few more details and then promptly stated they will follow up with the HMPO.
Hiya all, I posted here before about my first adult passport. I was receiving emails about the status on it but they were completely incorrect, I had an email today saying it was waiting to be checked, I then had a call from them saying it has been printed and will be sent off tomorrow. I hope this helps some of you
An update so applied July 9th for two renewals one for Peterborough the other is with Newport spoke to the help desk today as we are two weeks from flying nothing that can be done to escalate anything until Saturday.
No more call backs and whilst you are on hold for longer and sometimes you have to try a few times to get in the cue for me I wanted to speak with someone rather than waiting for a call back so that suited me. Message sent via Twitter dm these folks were initially sharp to respond but now I think they are being overwhelmed with questions so I’d call and wait. Be calm have any reasons for why you didn’t renew before It got so close to flying ready because they ask.
One is processing and one is approved interesting that Peterborough went from documents received straight to approved whilst Newport are processing.
I’m slightly less panicked now hopefully both will be delivered later this week or early next week. Friendly on the phone and to be honest in my case we did not help ourselves with the timing of the renewals so I’ll be grateful and relieved if they come through with some time to spare.

I spoke to the passport office today and was advised paper applications are taking around 7 weeks from when it's scanned onto their system. I sent my kids on the 6th ( scanned onto system on the 15th) still not even being processed yet.
Well I'm pretty impressed so far with the progress of my adult renewal
Application approved 28 July 2020

Says being printed now, should have it by the end of next week I reckon which would be far quicker than I expected 👍
Can I ask which passport office you sent your documents to please?
If that's directed at me I applied using the post office digital check and send service
Hello all, my passport has been sent today. How long did delivery take for you roughly?
3 days for us. You can track it on the tnt website, if you use your PEX number without PEX and any spaces. It will tell you the estimated delivery date
Didn’t work for me that reference number but mine was escalated and fast tracked
Hi, I was wondering if anyone is waiting for a first adult passport or has received one? My application has been processing for three weeks.
Have you had a interview yet
Anyone waiting for over a week for supporting documents to be returned?
New passport delivered 20 July. But no supporting documents yet. Liverpool. Paid for secure delivery.
Can anyone tell me why it’s gone from sending it to examining it?
Have you actually had a interview for your first passport
Wow, colour me impressed (and shocked to be honest)

@zAndy1 - show off! (Only kidding!) ;-)
Woah - finally I can breathe now, been a few frustrating weeks but passports finally approved. One sent and I guess the other will be at some point this week. So should have both by next week. (5 weeks since application submitted online for a simple child and adult renewal)
Will post my timelines when I get them.
Anyone due to go on holiday soon - have fun, enjoy! And forget about all the passport stress!!! You derserve it!! :-)
@zAndy1 how? Which passport office? Who did you bribe? What sexual favours did you dispense?
I might quote your turn around time in my complaint about the handling of my application, since I've been told its going to take another 5 weeks for my standard renewal, which puts it precisely 1 week after the absolute latest date I require my passport for and which I have told them multiple times, thanks HMPO. Can't tell if its incompetence or maliciousness.
@JL lol, applied using the post office digital check and send and it's a standard adult renewal. Don't know if the fact I applied through the post office made a difference but I'm amazed how quickly it's been processed
Received old pp
I have applied to renew my British National (Overseas) passport online because my passport will expire this year and I need it to prove my identity overseas.
I submitted my online application on June 21, 2020, and mailed my application on June 30, 2020. It was signed as received on July 3, 2020, but so far the HM Passport office at Liverpool has NOT updated its status to document received nor being processed. It is already one month from the actual arrival.
I heard from some other discussion forums in Hong Kong that some applications arrived between July 8 and July 13 are being processed now.
What happened?
Childs Renewal - postoffice Check & send - Sent to Newport
7th July I applied by post office check & send (just after govt announced we are allowed to travel)
15th July HMPO had received passport application.(9 days after sending)
Between 15th & 28th July had messaged twitter a few times & got update emails from their tracking page found out my passport was at newport.
27th July called the passport office & requested call back, got call back & asked to be put through to complaints dept.
28th July ( 2 weeks before travel- travel 11th Agust) requested the application to be expedited with evidence I booked travel before covid
28th July emailed my local MP
29th July got expedited application rejected because I don’t fit the criteria of application being with them 4 weeks (which i wouldn’t because we were advised not to apply before the 4th July because before that it was essential travel only.)
29th July received text saying due to delays passport could be up to 6 weeks.
1st August Old passport turned up
3rd August New passport arrived – Yay
So a very Stressful 27 days with a lot of mis-nformation from different departments – but it came a week before we are due to travel!
