Urgent UK passport services

Need a Passport Urgently? Your UK Fast Track & Premium Guide

Need a passport urgently?

If you cannot wait for the standard passport service, HM Passport Office offers urgent passport services including 1 Week Fast Track and 1 Day Premium. This guide explains who may use them, what they cost, how to book, and how to find the nearest Passport Office. It also shows current Passport Waiting Time community averages so you can judge whether you actually need an urgent appointment.

Passport Waiting Time is an independent website and is not part of HM Passport Office or GOV.UK.

Which urgent passport service can I use?

Choose the type of application that best matches your situation. The result is guidance only — the official GOV.UK service asks the questions that decide what you can book.

Choose your application type

This tool is a starting point, not a decision. HM Passport Office confirms eligibility when you apply on GOV.UK.

Select an application type to see which urgent services may apply.

Find your nearest Passport Office

Enter your postcode to see which Passport Offices are closest to you for an urgent passport appointment.

Enter a UK postcode to sort offices by distance.

Enter a UK postcode to sort the seven Passport Offices by distance. The map already shows every office.

Appointment availability can vary. If your nearest office does not have a suitable appointment, it may be worth checking another Passport Office if you are able to travel. The closest office is not necessarily the one with the earliest appointment.

All UK Passport Offices

Urgent appointments are held at seven HM Passport Office customer service centres. You must book before you attend — these are not walk-in counters.

1 Week Fast Track Passport Service

1 Week Fast Track is HM Passport Office’s courier urgent service. You apply and book online, attend a short appointment at a Passport Office, then the new passport is normally delivered about one week after that appointment.

The earliest appointment is the next day after you apply. Appointments can be booked up to 3 weeks in advance and usually last up to 10 minutes. You cannot turn up without a booking.

Fast Track can be used for qualifying adult renewals, many child passports (including first child applications), replacements for lost, stolen or damaged passports, and some changes of personal details. It cannot be used for a first adult passport, and you cannot use it if you are applying from outside the UK.

Current official fees are £192 for an adult passport, £206 for an adult frequent traveller passport, £156.50 for a child passport and £170.50 for a child frequent traveller passport. Always confirm the amount on GOV.UK when you pay.

If you are deciding whether Fast Track is necessary, compare these appointment-plus-one-week times with current PWT waiting times and recent applicant timelines. Standard adult renewals are often completed well inside the official three-week guidance.

1 Day Premium Passport Service

1 Day Premium is the fastest routine urgent service, but the name does not mean you can apply this morning and receive a passport this afternoon.

The earliest appointment is 2 days after you apply — not necessarily the same day you submit. You then attend the appointment, hand in your old passport, and the new passport is normally ready to collect from the same office about four hours later.

Eligibility is narrower than Fast Track. GOV.UK currently allows 1 Day Premium only for qualifying adult passport renewals. It cannot be used for a first adult passport, child applications, or a typical lost or stolen replacement.

Current official fees are £239.50 for a standard adult passport and £253.50 for an adult frequent traveller passport. An appointment is always required.

Which service should I choose?

  • Adult renewal and need it as quickly as possible?

Check whether 1 Day Premium is available.

  • Can wait around one week following an appointment?

1 Week Fast Track may be appropriate.

  • Child passport?

Check 1 Week Fast Track eligibility. Premium is not for child applications.

  • First adult passport?

Standard Fast Track and Premium services are not available.

  • Travelling because of serious illness, bereavement, urgent medical treatment or government business?

Contact HM Passport Office / the Passport Adviceline and follow the official emergency guidance.

How to book an urgent passport appointment

  1. Choose the appropriate urgent service

Compare 1 Week Fast Track and 1 Day Premium, or use the decision tool on this page. Confirm you are not applying for a first adult passport on those services.

  2. Apply through GOV.UK

Use the official Get a passport urgently service. You will be asked questions to work out which services you may be eligible for.

  3. Select a Passport Office

Choose one of the seven UK offices. The nearest office is not always the one with the earliest appointment.

  4. Pay and book an appointment

Pay the urgent fee and book a slot. Appointments can be booked up to three weeks in advance and usually last up to 10 minutes.

  5. Attend with the required documents

Bring everything listed in your confirmation. Someone else can attend in some cases if they bring the documents GOV.UK specifies.

  6. Receive or collect the passport

Fast Track passports are normally delivered about a week after the appointment. Premium passports are normally ready to collect about four hours after the appointment.

What should I take to my urgent passport appointment?

Your booking confirmation and the instructions in the GOV.UK application are the definitive checklist. What you need depends on the type of application, so this page does not give a universal document list.

In general you should expect to take:

  • your current or old passport, where you still have it
  • any supporting documents the service asked you to bring
  • your application details and PEX reference
  • anything else HM Passport Office specifically listed in your confirmation

If someone else is attending for you, they must bring the extra identification and permission documents described on GOV.UK for your service.

Already applied for your passport?

Do not assume that submitting a second urgent application will speed up an application already in progress. GOV.UK currently warns that you will not get the passport sooner and that you can be charged a £34.50 admin fee for each additional application. Follow official tracking and HM Passport Office guidance instead.

Do you actually need Fast Track?

Standard processing is often quicker than people expect. These figures are Passport Waiting Time community averages from published applicant timelines, not official HM Passport Office guarantees.

Need a passport because of an emergency?

Circumstances such as urgent medical treatment, serious illness, death or bereavement, or urgent government business may be handled differently from Fast Track and Premium. Do not assume those paid appointment services are the emergency route.

Call the Passport Adviceline and follow the official GOV.UK guidance. Availability and what can be issued depends on your situation — this website cannot promise a document or a timescale.

Passport Adviceline: 0300 222 0000. Hours: Monday to Friday, 8am to 8pm; weekends and UK bank holidays, 9am to 5:30pm.

Urgent passport FAQs

There is no guaranteed 24-hour passport. 1 Day Premium is the fastest routine urgent service, but the earliest appointment is usually two days after you apply, and the new passport is normally ready to collect about four hours after that appointment — not necessarily the same calendar day you start the application.

“1 Day Premium” does not mean you can apply this morning and collect this afternoon. You apply online, wait for the earliest available appointment (often from two days later), attend, then collect about four hours after the appointment if the application is straightforward.

The official 1 Week Fast Track fees are £192 for an adult passport, £206 for an adult frequent traveller (54-page) passport, £156.50 for a child passport and £170.50 for a child frequent traveller passport. Confirm the amount on GOV.UK when you apply, as fees can change.

The official 1 Day Premium fees are £239.50 for a standard adult passport and £253.50 for an adult frequent traveller (54-page) passport. Premium is for qualifying adult renewals only.

After you attend your Fast Track appointment, the passport is normally delivered by courier about one week later. You also need time to get an appointment — the earliest slot may be the next day after you apply, depending on availability.

No. You cannot use the standard 1 Week Fast Track or 1 Day Premium services for a first adult passport. Use the standard GOV.UK application, or contact the Passport Adviceline if you have a genuine emergency such as urgent medical treatment or bereavement.

Yes, GOV.UK lists child passports among the applications that may use 1 Week Fast Track, including many first child and child renewal cases. 1 Day Premium is not available for child passports. Confirm eligibility in the official service.

Replacing a lost, stolen or damaged passport may be possible on 1 Week Fast Track. 1 Day Premium is only for adult renewals, so it is not the usual route for a lost or stolen passport. Follow the official GOV.UK questions when you apply.

There are seven HM Passport Office customer service centres: London, Peterborough, Newport, Liverpool, Durham, Glasgow and Belfast. They handle booked urgent appointments, not walk-in standard applications.

Use the postcode finder on this page to see which of the seven offices is nearest. The closest office is not guaranteed to have the earliest appointment — check availability on GOV.UK and consider travelling further if you can.

You can usually choose any of the seven offices when you book, subject to appointment availability and the service you are using. You do not have to use the office nearest your home.

Yes. Urgent Passport Office services operate by appointment. Complete the GOV.UK application, pay and book a slot before you travel.

No. Do not travel to a Passport Office without a booked appointment. Staff will not normally see walk-in applicants for Fast Track or Premium services.

Yes, GOV.UK allows someone else to attend in your place if they bring your PEX application reference and the documents listed for your service. For Premium they also need your old passport, a signed permission letter and their own ID. Follow the instructions in your confirmation email.

If you have already applied and have not received the passport, GOV.UK says you should not pay for a second urgent application. It will not get the passport to you sooner and you can be charged an admin fee for each additional application. Follow official tracking and Adviceline guidance instead.

Appointment availability varies. If your nearest office has no suitable slot, check another office if you are able to travel. You can also look again later — new appointments can appear, but do not rely on last-minute availability.

Follow the guidance in your confirmation email. Changing is free if the appointment is more than 48 hours away. Within 48 hours you may need to cancel and rebook, and cancelling close to the appointment can incur an admin fee. Missed appointments are not refunded.

No. Fast Track is normally delivered about a week after the appointment, but that is not a guarantee that it will arrive before a particular travel date. Do not book non-refundable travel until you have the passport in hand.

No. Processing and delivery can take longer than expected, and appointments may not be available when you need them. Book travel only after you have a valid passport you can travel on.
