I applied for a child's renewal online on the 23rd May, text on 29th May to say expired passport received by Peterborough Office. Status has been 'processing' since 3rd June. Phoned the office yesterday to chase and was advised that all documents were sent and received by the Newport office on 3rd June as minimal staff at Peterborough (if this is the case why did they specify documents to go to Peterborough?). Holiday which we thought would be cancelled is now going ahead as planned on 18th July and looking less and less likely I will the receive the passport by then. Son turns 16 on 28th July, chances are we will miss the holiday (no refund will apply) and I will be contacted after the 28th to ask for additional fees to cover an adults passport and to complete a new application - when I asked this question yesterday; frustratingly, I was just advised 'yes this is a possibility'.

For info I contacted HMPO on Twitter on 03/07/20 stating that it was urgent and that the holiday was booked prior to Covid and asked if there was anything they could do. I received a reply on 09/07/20 saying they had put a note on the application that it was urgent.
On 10/07/2020 i contacted my MP as i saw via this forum that people who applied after me were progressing at a faster rate, they replied instantly and had contacted UKVI who informed them that it was noted as urgent. My MP advised me to call the HMPO help on Tuesday (14/07) this week to request an update, which i did. I very helpful call handler tried several things to escalate the application, however my timeline was just outside of being able to this, so he put in callback request from the processing team (within 48 hours). The time lapsed so I gave the helpline a call yesterday (I knew they were busy and i wasn't expecting a callback in 48 hours but thought why not) and a rude and abrupt call handler answered who basically refused to help me.
I therefore contacted HMPO via Twitter again basically detailing how rude the call handler was and also informed my MP who had requested an update. Next thing I know it was processed and approved. I spoke to my MP today who said they had contact UKVI after my email yesterday for an update as I was not having any luck. Maybe i was lucky having a rude call handler which forced me to complain?!?
All in all HMPO were great (aside from the call handler yesterday), they are dealing with so many people, who like me are probably right pains in the arse chasing for updates. If you want you application to progress I would suggest regular contact in a polite manner (within the timeframes they suggest unless really urgent) as there is no logic to processing times - a call handler pretty much told me it was luck of the draw where you applications sits, especially in terms of documents being logged as received!
Good luck everyone. I'll update when i receive the passport.
So Iv been panaking my daughter passport renewal wouldn’t arrive in time or her photo would be rejected as I did it at home and submitted online but I just got an email Saying it has been approved and will be being printed. Iv added below my time scale and will post when it arrives.

AAARRRGGGHHHH Just realised son's passport has expired - due to travel 6th August, 2 weeks 6 days - do I stand a chance? Has anyone hand delivered a renewal to Newport? What is the quickest way? HELP!
You carnt hand deliver anything and even when mine was
Put down as an emergency took
Over 2 and half weeks
And by Monday u looking at 2 weeks and couple of day’s And by the time
You post it back your looking Tuesday being delivered there
Most take 2 odd weeks to even acknowledge the old one has been returned to them and until then the application is on hold
Oh gosh fishkins - do let us know what you do and how you progress! It is quite frustrating as some people have been waiting a long time and some people have sent passports later and have had it back in a week or two. I read an earlier post where someone said they needed their passport urgently and they got it printed and sent out the same day! So it’s hard to say! If you ask anyone at HMPO they will say they can guarantee anything. If you booked before Covid maybe they might be able to do something for you! Either way - good luck!
Good morning all,
I have read this forum regularly over the last 2 weeks, thank you for all of the information, it has been hugely useful and a big comfort.
We booked a holiday pre Covid and had to get a child's passport renewed. Our travel date is 31st July.
We got very polite but firm push back from the PP office up until we were 2 weeks away from travel at which point it all completely changed gear and was resolved immediately.
Stay calm everyone, if you can prove you are travelling within 2 weeks they really do get these things processed as fast as possible.
Good luck.
Below is our timeline.

Thanks AD191 - that’s encouraging news. Glad yours has been approved. A big relief!
A little update on our wait times.
3 passports ordered together on 23 June. 1x adult renewal which took around 2 weeks to arrive and x2 child renewals.
X1 child renewal has now been posted and according to tracking will be delivered on Monday 20/7.
X1 child renewal has been approved and I'm just waiting for it to be sent.
In total we will have waited around 4 weeks for all passports to be done.
I haven't contacted them or complained during our wait either as we don't fly until the end of August so still had lots of time and I applied under normal renewal without any reason for the passports to be expedited.
Oh and the adult renewal was sent to Durham (new blue/black passport sent for those that are into that sort of thing) and the children's to Peterbourgh.
Hi,
If you don't mind me asking, why do they ask when you booked? How does it matter? And what counts as proof of travel? A booking reference?
@MiSa I had to show the booking from my accommodation which had the booking date on there and also forwarded emails of the flight booking which also had the date of the email on there. You need to ring fairly often to try and escalate the claim - the reason they want you to prove you booked it before Covid is to show you haven’t just booked a last minute holiday without having your passports sorted first. It seems they will try and help you if they can, but they don’t tell you at first that it is going to be sorted as they don’t like making promises - even if it’s last minute like mine! I got a call yesterday from the complaints team saying they had sent my passport Royal Mail special delivery so it will definitely be with me in time.
214 days and counting for a standard overseas child’s renewal. I’ve been calling every week after 4 months. It’s still is standard ID checks. No one has contracted the counter signatory. Helpline not helpful in any way. No idea if they need anything from me. No idea when or if they will issue a passport. Daughters passport expires in 7 days. We are still overseas. Utterly frustrating.
My partner applied for his daughters and the passport office have sent a letter to his daughters mother for approval that he’s applying an for her to send birth certificate. Has anyone experienced this and how long did it take for them to approve the passport once they received the letter an birth certificate of the mum.
Starting a panic more now. Passport office signed for my sons old passport last Monday in Durham but it’s still not even showing as received! How long has it taken for others to get receipt confirmed? We go on holiday on 12th August 😭
Ours took 2 weeks before it showed as received.
12th will be very tight
@thekooseenlins - my son's renewal took 12 days before before it was acknowledged as received, even though I knew they received 10days before (royal mail tracked) so hopefully by the end of the week they should acknowledge yours. once they do, I would call them and as you will be within your two weeks travel time they will escalate. I think its tight but its do-able. Ive been waiting for 3 weeks for two passports. Ive read some posts and people have escalated and had their passports approved and sent all in one day! Lucky..so I guess theres always a chance!
They will only escalate it if at least 14 days have passed and are within 14 days of travel and you can email them proof that holiday was booked before March
Once I escalated it And sent them the proof they asked for all 4 of mine were approved printed and sent and in my hand within 5 days
Good morning applied for both my daughters on the 10th of July and got a message that the applications have been received on the 16th, i have applied by paper with the post office but in the meantime we have decided to go away in the first week of August so fingers crossed everyone!!!
That is gonna be very tight to be fair
Looking at the thread yes 🥺
