Signature error

Random question sent mine my husbands and two childrens applications off together paper form check and send at post office. Mine and the boys due tomorrow however speaking to passport office he said my husbands was rejected due to signature in section 9 outside the box and a new form being sent to him with a letter. Does this mean that its just the signature and how long does it usually take to rectify it and will we need to get it countersigned again.
