I am wondering about the stages that my adult renewal will go through, and when I'll know which stages are involved.
Here's the progress so far:
Application history
Documents received 2:52pm on 25 April 2022
Application received 6:27pm on 28 March 2022
Application submitted 6:26pm on 28 March 2022
So it's been at 'documents received' for over a week. I understand that the next stage is either 'Application approved' (if it's all following the automated route) or 'Application being processed' (if it needs manual attention).
How quickly will I know which way it's going to go?
And does anyone have any idea of the difference in wait times for each of those two stages?
Many thanks!

'Application approved' vs 'Application being processed' - when do you know?

That's amazing news swm1982. Thanks for reporting back I really appreciate it. That really does give me hope. I had a web chat this morning they were absolutely useless, just parroting what is already available on the website. Do you think it depends on who you get? I asked why the application was in processing and what I could do. What are the magic words you used that elicited actual progress?
Depending on how soon you need it. If you don’t need it urgently leave it, however if you are on a deadline ‘processing’ generally means there’s an issue and I would contact them to find out what it is, as it may be on a pile without particular priority.

Hi schpilkers,
I think it may depend on who you get through to. I was just extra polite, told them I was very anxious after reading about 10 week plus waits in processing online. They assured me that it shouldn’t be much longer, then asked me when I was travelling. I told them, they said they’d add a note to the application and I thanked them.. that was all really. Then as I say, 45 mins later all sorted.

I’ve given up trying to find out what happening with my son’s… tried calling, webchats and nothing, even has a call back but hasn’t seemed to do anything, it’s been in processing awaiting an examiner since 15th May now after starting the application in mid April, I know not long compared to most but enough to make me worried sick.. spoke to a lovely lady today on Webchat who said trust the process, wasn’t sure if she was being sarcastic or not.
Can’t believe they have no idea if your are in a queue to be processed how long it could take, I have a feeling it’s going to be frantic emails and panic at 10 weeks and travelling to Durham to chance my luck at someone kind there helping me.. I’ll only have two more weeks after then before we travel, my son is besides himself feel so useless
Sorry, do we count the date we’ve sent it or from when the online application or when they’ve received it for our 10 weeks please?
I applied mid April and sent next day recorded, however they “received” it on the 11th May.
Thank you!
Almost the same timings as me, I’m working on from the date I applied which the lady on Webchat said was correct when I spoke to her today.. but who knows reading these threads seems people are saying different things, I’ll 100% be pushing from 10 weeks from my application, advice says allow 10 weeks when applying, not sure we can be held accountable if it takes them 3 plus weeks to get your docs onto the system.
Hope you get sorted soon

And still waiting 😫
Did you make any contact the Passport office?10 weeks has passed already 😳
It is really frustrating.
Nope I have not because someone said that apparently is 10 weeks from when processing started so 20/04 in my case … plus this is my first British passport after naturalisation also have not got my foreign passport and documents back so yeah I am slightly worried but because I’m not planning on going anywhere abroad I’m happy to wait few more weeks 29/06 and after that will do everything to get it sorted
Thanks for the reply 👍
