Passport renewal - is current passport still valid?

I’ve just submitted an application to renew a child’s passport that expires in December. I’ve since realised that it would of been ok to use this passport for our travel in August, I’ve not sent off the old passport yet. Is the old passport still valid to use? Is it possible to cancel my renewal application?
