Back in April 2022 i had to call off my application as I had a busy travelling schedule ahead and found out about the backlog and the 10-week wait. Quite stressful to send out your original documents by post and think about having to spend 10 weeks (as per govt site) as a paperless person. This procedure makes no sense in 2023.

really simple to renew via the online method. i had my expired passport to hand which helped fill in the details quickly. i posted my old passport the same day via recorded delivery. passport photos too are really easy to upload. i used a booth and chose the digital code to use, you also still receive a print out of the photos.
overall apart from the additional costs £10.00 photos £6.85 for postage i was impressed with the service.

Your form is missing a key date – when old passport is posted, as the new one is only processed when that’s received by HMPO.
For me: application 30 Jan, old passport posted 3 Feb, received by HMPO 6 Feb, new passport’s printed “date of issue” 8 Feb, on my doormat 10 Feb.

Self upload photo process was very hit & miss – their AI assessment on what is a good photo is dubious. Luckily you can affirm the photo is good and follows their guidelines.
