My experience was with the Peterborough office, I applied for my renewal online on Friday 22nd April and posted my old passport the same day. I sent my old passport via Signed for Royal Mail Delivery with a guaranteed arrival day on Monday 25th April. My old passport arrived at the passport office on 25th April, according to Royal Mail tracking, but it took two weeks for the online tracking to update.

I was really worried with all the news about long waits but actually the process was quick. I sent my old passport back with Royal Mail signed for delivery. Royal Mail are apparently sending so many that they did not get a signature but when I called were able to confirm it had been received at the Liverpool office. It took 2 weeks from being received to being acknowledged on the Passport office tracking. After that it only took a week to be approved, printed and delivered.

Digital photo taken on my camera phone was indicated as ‘poor quality’ even though it met all the criteria and was clear but I submitted anyway as system allows it (being able to enter an explanation as to why you believe it to be of good quality is a good feature). Due to the photo indivation, was a bit of a worry when return of my old passport to the Passport Office was shown as signed for by Royal Mail on 26 April but not shown as received by Passport Office until 9 May but apart from that, all was fine. New passport received today, 13 May

This was a renewal of a child’s passport to an adult’s. I would have given the service 5 stars but for the following:
The government website is confusing for this type of application – although you might think this is a “first adult passport”, in fact it counts as an “adult renewal”. I had to phone up the helpline to clarify this and waited just over an hour for a reply. The advisor was extremely helpful though, and explained that if we were running short of time, once we had received a message that the application was being processed, we could phone up and switch to the priority service, paying the extra fee over the phone. Not sure why they don’t put this on their website. However, we didn’t need to as it arrived in 12 days!

Once applied for I was then watching the news and reading social media platforms. I started to panic, there were some stories of peoples passports taking months with people missing their holidays. At first I was a bit apprehensive because it took them 11 days to register my documents. That was my only problem with this service. I sent my passport the following day via special delivery 26th and was received by the passport office 27th but yet they didn’t update my page until 7th May. Apart from that it went quite smoothly.

It was very stressful see other peoples get approved much quicker as I felt like there might be something wrong with mine and I was just unaware as this has happened to others.
After calling the standard phone number about 100 times and getting cut off without speaking to someone, I saw another number on the Passport Chaos 2022 Facebook group. After being on hold an hour and a half I spoke to someone very nice and friendly, and explained my flight was in about 2.5 weeks and it had been processing since mid March. She said she’d put a note on my file. Coincidence or not, it was approved the same day.
After approval things were smooth and I received it three days later through the letter box.

The most difficult part of the application was the fact the government website changed the waiting time to up to 10 weeks. As I’d booked a holiday this caused a lot of stress wondering if we’d get the passport in time! The process was very smooth however and I received the passport in 5 weeks 2 days. Needed a passport urgently as my child travels abroad to comply with contact order. This time scale reflects using the 2 week prior to departure upgraded service. Which took 4 working days to receive a call back before this request was able to be processed

I applied for two child renewals on the same day, and sent off their old passports the next day, to two different offices. Both as recorded delivery. My sons passport was delivered and signed for two days later. We now have his new passport, so a lovely quick turnaround, despite all they hype. However, we are still waiting on my daughters. Royal mail tracking shows they haven’t even delivered her old passport yet, three weeks on. I spoke to someone at Royal Mail after 7 days, who said wait two week as they are finding that Mail isn’t always being scanned on delivery at some passport offices!! (What’s the flipping point in paying fir recorded delivery!!) two week on, still nothing, so I have managed to speak to someone at the passport office who has advised to “hold out for another week, as it’s taking up to 14-22 *working* days to log returned documents. I can’t help but feel a bit twitchy now. When I applied, it was 14 weeks till our holiday. Now it’s getting close to their 10 week processing time, and I’ve still had no update that they’ve even received her old passport. This application is (supposedly) being processed at the Durham office.
