I submitted the application and sent off my passport to Glasgow on 3rd March. The biggest wait was between submitting the application and waiting for the acknowledgment of receipt. My old passport wasn’t acknowledged until March 23. I had spoken to someone the day before (after an hour wait on the phone) who thought it was outside of normal turn around times but couldn’t help further. I was on the cusp of cancelling the passport and resubmitting the application as lost. It would have meant taking the next available in person, fast track appointment in Glasgow (I live in southern England) to have any hope of getting my passport in time to travel and I would have had to pay the fee again. But, in the nick of time my passport was marked as received, and my application was accepted the next day (March 24). This morning (30th) I got a message to say it had been printed and was being dispatched. Fingers crossed it’ll be with me tomorrow. I don’t blame HMPO. They’re clearly overstretched. I do think though it’s a mistake not to prioritise acknowledgment of receipt of passports or advertising up to date information of current wait times for each stage of the process. I think people can accept there’s a wait time, but not knowing causes a lot of stress – and panicky phone calls like mine that create extra work. It could be that the PO don’t have sufficient resources, or it could be that by delaying acknowledgement or receipt, it passes some of the blame to the post office and makes application processing times look better. Either way, it doesn’t really serve anyone’s interests – just creates queries and stress. Anyway, good luck with your application. Completed 2 passport applications at the same time. One went to Liverpool, the other to Peterborough. Peterborough was slower by a few days but both were received in less than 3 weeks which is pretty good. Still awaiting old documents.

Once passport was with TNT, no contact to say when it would be delivered and tracking showed out for delivery and then back in depot so was very unclear when passport would arrive for several days.
