The actual application process was easy, but I was incorrectly advised by the passport office that I could apply in my married name, even though my original South African passport was in my maiden name. I had to withdraw my application (losing the passport fee I had paid) and go through the process of changing my name first in SA, which was not easy at all, before reapplying.
I attended a virtual interview to confirm my identity, my passport was approved and printed on the same day, with delivery scheduled 2 days later.

Took my own photo with this and wasn’t sure about it, but it went through with no issues (had to spend a lot of time being very careful with the lighting to reduce shadows). No idea why it took a month from all the information being provided to the application being approved. Passport printed just before a bank holiday weekend which goes some way to explaining the delay in delivery, but not fully, as didn’t arrive until Wednesday 31st.

Online application completed Saturday 20th May Evening.
Very easy to take and submit your own photos.
Photos endorsed on Monday 22nd May. Old passports submitted that afternoon via next day delivery. Confirmed receipt on Tuesday 23rd May. Just under two weeks later on Thursday 1st June notified passport application was approved. Informed Friday 2nd June passports had been printed and due for despatch.
Received before midday on Monday 5th June.
