This won’t be interesting for anyone who doesn’t have a passport from another country! I have had a British passport for over 40 years and but also have a Canadian passport as I was born there. I have never had any problem before in renewing my British passport. Quite quickly upon receiving my application it was noted that my names did not quite match on my British passport to my Canadian one – my British passport had my middle name on it whereas my Canadian one did not. The computer told me to change my name on my Canadian passport – not possible as my Canadian birth certificate had no middle name. Thus followed a flurry of copies of Canadian birth certificate, Baptismal certificate (where my middle name appeared ) and documents such as Council Tax and Water Bill to prove I did not generally use my middle name. I rang (five times!) and spoke to generally polite and kind people who agreed that the easiest thing to do was to remove my middle name . However it appeared my application just sat and sat probably because it actually required someone to do some work on it. So the whole thing took almost a month.
The sting in the tail is that your British passport needs to match your drivers license exactly (especially if you want to deal with HMRC!). Your driver’s license needs to match your car registration or you could be fined £1000. Also it is worth looking at your name on National Insurance, NHS – you can be refused things such as mortgage applications, loans etc if your names don’t stack up….

Very quick and they kept me updated throughout the process. I thought the application was very easy to fill out and the instructions were clear. It would have been even quicker but post was delayed because of the bank holiday. Very glad I didn’t use the fast track option (I knew times were fast because of this website so I’m very happy to have used it).
For exact timeline:
* I applied and submitted my passport on Saturday. ( I did this using special delivery – was around £7)
* They recieved on Tuesday
* Approved and began printing on Wednesday
* Shipped it out on Thursday
* And I received it on Saturday
So from sending my passport, I recieved it exactly 1 week later. And the vast amount of that time was spent in the post. They received my passport and sent it off in just 2 days – amazing service!
I would also recommend not bothering with a professional photo booth and just taking it yourself at home. I took it on my front camera, and had a relative help me. Took us around 5 minutes to get a good shot that fit the requirements. Again the instructions on the Gov website are pretty clear on this.
Also with price increases in April (found out this was happening via PWT’s twitter) now is the best time to apply! Get in before the summer holiday rush.
