Very simple and quick process. It is unfair how the press is scaring people into worrying about how long this takes.
I would suggest anyone to apply as soon as possible but not to worry too much and buy into the 14 weeks hype.

Applied on line. Very easy process. Posted old passport same day. Following day Passport office announced 5 week strike starting on 3rd April. I feared the worst as I needed my new passport within 6 weeks due to travel commitments. Delighted and amazed when I received message on 21st saying my passport had been approved and sent for printing.
Received 2 days later.
Overall 8 day turnaround from submission to receipt.

Despite having the photo taken at my local Timpson it did not pass the automated check. I submitted it anyway and it was accepted, but my understanding is that this meant the image had to be checked manually. I would suggest to take one at home using a phone in the first instance and seeing whether that will pass the automated check. The only other advice I would give to someone reading this who needs a passport faster than 10 weeks would be to use the seven day service as you will have difficulty to speed up an ordinary application once it is submitted.
