I got my photo and digital code on a Friday lunchtime, and filled out the online application the same afternoon. I bought an envelope to return my old passport on Friday evening, and posted that on Saturday morning, before the collection time. On Monday morning Royal Mail delivered my old passport, that was acknowledged by the passport office in the afternoon. Next morning my application had been approved and my passport was sent to be printed. On Wednesday morning I received the new passport.

Passport office was very fast, (only problem was Royal Mail took over a week to deliver the old passport; was posted on the 28th Oct but only arrived on the 6th Nov!).
We thought there wouldn’t be any need to confirm identity as child was over 12 but they still wanted that done.
Also, even though we renewed two child passports we had to post each one to different passport offices.
