Straightforward and easy to track. Website initially told me it didn’t like my photo (even though taken professionally) saying it couldn’t differentiate clearly between me and the background. I submitted anyway and all was fine. I live within a few miles of the address application depot > shame there’s not an option to hand deliver my application and save the Royal Mail’s £7.50 postage

“Old passport received” notification was 1.5 days after Royal Mail said HMPO had actually received it.
Photo from Photo-Me machine code was rejected by HMPO 3.5 weekdays after official receipt of old passport. I took a new one at another machine within 2 hours of rejection notification and received photo approval notification within 2 hours of entering the updated code. Passport ready for despatch 1.5 days later.

11 days and pretty painless.
I haven’t received the old cancelled passport yet but hopefully I’ll get that within a few days.
