Application to renew a passport that had lapsed during covid. The passport had not been sent back to HMPO for cancellation which caused an issue!

Text message “application received” 15 Nov
Telephone call from HMPO 17 Nov asking for some further information and the old passport to be returned – fortunately I found it in a drawer!
Passport notified as being printed on 22 Nov
Text message “You should receive your new passport in a few days” on 22 Nov
Passport delivered on 23 Nov
Supporting documents and old passport returned 24 Nov.
Despite being a slightly unusual case with a passport outstanding that hadn’t been cancelled, the process was very straightforward and rapid. The staff I dealt with were without exception polite and helpful. Only reason it isn’t a 5 review is because of the issue with the uncanceled passport holding things up (does it really matter if it’s out of date but all the supporting documentation is in order?)

Comments:
Very stressful overall. Heard nothing for weeks then 2 weeks before depature requested documents confirming my address (I live in a unit complex) then 3 days later another request for documents. After receiving approval I contacted HMPO to get a tracking number. DHL delivered 1 day before stated date and just popped in letter box. I didn’t sign for delivery. 4 days left till departure date.
