    Hi VZZZ,

I agree with you and feel your frustration. The process does not need to be this complicated or this long, but I’m not in their shoes to judge. If you were staying for an extended amount of time in the country you’re travelling to, an option would have been to apply for your passport from abroad, but I wouldn’t recommend that route as other things could go wrong with the application and it’s probably relatively a lot easier to rectify issues while in the UK.

I think it’s even worse for British citizens living overseas who have to wait without a passport in a foreign country for several weeks not knowing when will your renewed passport be returned. Sure, you can apply for an emergency travel document at the nearest embassy, but my feeling is in the case of a real emergency, those documents won’t come fast enough. Surely a better process should be put in place (perhaps something like: apply, keep old passport until the application is processed, have option of either send old passport at the final stage or have it processed at a local consulate/embassy).

Hopefully your application will be done in time, but judging from the timelines we’re seeing, I’d say definitely have a backup plan

    Hello sparekh,
Your application could go to the ‘application being processed’ stage or straight to approval. If you see the processing stage in your tracking, this would mean, as I understand it, that your application has gone into the regular/manual process, whereas if it goes straight to approval, then it would mean that your application was in a ‘digital queue’. That’s assuming they don’t come back and ask you for additional supporting documentation.
Unfortunately, I’m seeing more and more applications going into the potentially slower, manual process.
    Good luck to all

Unless I’m reading it wrong, you’ve got 16 weeks from date of application before you’re due to travel. I don’t think the queue is that long, at least not from what we can tell so far.

I’m also guessing that you’re in the UK, so you have the option to cancel and fast-track. It’s the 1-week fast-track option for child renewals. You’ll find threads about the process in this forum. I don’t fully recall the process, but I remember that there was a suggestion to report the documents lost as waiting for the supporting documents to be returned to you could take the same amount of time as processing the original renewal applications. Perhaps make sure from now that you have all the required supporting documentation (birth certificates, etc…) in case you’re going down the route of reporting the old passports as lost.

I would definitely call the adviceline for up-to-date information and to make sure any advice I get in this forum is valid

    Hi @conz1234,
unfortunately I do not know, but I can tell you that I had child renewal application back in September which stayed in the processing stage for more than 6 weeks.

If it’s urgent, perhaps give them a call. There were direct numbers listed in one of the threads here. I didn’t call for my child renewal application as it was not urgent.

I know of a relative who has a first adult application and theirs has been in the processing stage for 4 weeks now. I know you said yours was an adult-renewal, so not exactly the same situation. My guess is that it depends on the case as well as the caseworker’s load.

    Good luck with your application

While many applications are getting approved within 2 to 4 weeks, it seems there’s a good number of applications that are going into manual processing (‘application being processed’), and have now crossed the six-week mark

Not even sure what passport office mine is at. How do you find this out?

It’s on the address you sent the documents to

From what I’ve seen, Durham is acknowledging documents within 7 to 10 days. Hopefully they’ve acknowledged yours by now.

Documents for my child renewal application were delivered on the 16th of November, and were acknowledged on the 23rd

My response is a bit late. For online application, you’ll know when you complete the online application, the website will show the address

Short answer: yes. It seems to be necessary because of a UK law or regulation that consists of matching your name on all valid passports you hold.

British passport applicants who have citizenship in other countries need to send any uncancelled passports from their other nationalities, and the name on the foreign passport needs to match the name on the certificate of registration or naturalisation.

You used to be able to send color photocopies of all pages of foreign passports. I’m not sure if that’s still acceptable.

Something’s up with forum not showing newer posts. Hopefully it will be resolved soon. Received notice of approval on Nov 16
